Saint Mathew´s Church is Artenara´s oldest religious building, and it stands out in the town square. Two square-based towers are to be highlighted, with pilasters for the belfry and clock. The plant consists in three bays separated by arches. The bays display an artistic tea wood pine coffered ceiling.

Initially the temple was merely a small chapel contructed in 1630. However, after a long period of deterioration, falling into ruins, in the year 1870 the current three bay-church was built, with construction of the towers concluding towards the middle of the 20th century.

The interior decoration took place during the decade of the sixties, with mural paintings in the presbytery being highlighted, along with the lateral chapels painted by José Arencibia Gil, with biblical scenes of the Ascencion or our Lord. Our Lady´s Ascension and of the Prophet Elias on his way to heaven in a golden chariot. These are the final paintings that the artist created, as he died in 1968 before they were finished.

In its whole the temple´s pictorial work constitutes a biblical trilogy. The one in the presbytery represents the Ascension of our Lord. This paintings is the central and most important one due to its dimensions.
